This one day workshop examines unconscious bias in the workplace and how to address it. Everyone has bias, it help us to decide what is safe, who we can trust and how to respond. The challenge arises when we make judgments without questioning the basis on which they are made. The workshop will cover identifying unconscious bias, ten ways to beat bias, components of an inclusive workplace and the little things that matter most. Participants will develop an awareness of the impact of unconscious bias and will be able to clearly define inclusion. 

This one day workshop is facilitated by Jenny Magee, an experienced business coach, trainer and diversity writer who helps people from different cultures understand and appreciate each other.  Jenny will provide advice for attendees about overcoming differences and prejudices at work.

Diversity Group Meeting: Workplace Literacy

This is an opportunity to learn about the benefits of up-skilling employees.  Metal Skills is a sheet-metal manufacturer and when it realized staff were struggling with paperwork and speaking English literacy training was initiated.  The training programme was a huge success as now employees can communicate better among themselves, and with their managers.  There are also fewer accidents as everyone understands the safety notices and absenteeism has dropped.

Metal Skills Human Resources Manager, Katrina Lee-Guard, will talk about how the business changed rosters so the factory could continue functioning while small groups of the 38 staff were tutored.  “Some were scared of having their skill gaps exposed, but when training started they realized how helpful it was for everyone.” 

You will be able to candidly discuss the challenges as well as the benefits of providing numeracy and literacy training in a workplace.   This is also an opportunity to network among like minded organisations and learn from each other.

Keynote speaker Professor Grant Schofield is from the Centre of Human Potential at AUT University. Despite the title Professor Schofield is NOT PC, boring or a ‘traditional’ academic. He translates science into intervention and better health outcomes for working people. He is also a consultant to the World Health Organisation focusing on non-communicable disease prevention in Pacific Islands.

This workshop will give you the confidence to employ people with varying abilities by creating an accessible and inclusive environment.  You will learn what is essential and important to people with diverse abilities to be able to be part of your team.  Discover the barriers that may currently exist in your workplace that you hadn’t considered before.  You will learn about funding that you may be able to tap into to assist you with some physical changes.  Imagine what the benefit would be if you created a more accessible environment that is not only more inclusive for those you employ but for the 20% of people that cannot currently access your business.  This workshop has two facilitators.

Tony Howe has worked at the Independent Living Service for over 20 years and is the go-to guru for information and advice on all things disability.  He just happens to use a wheel chair to get about daily.  Tony designed the 2011 Rugby World Cup access programme that was rolled out throughout New Zealand.  He is an accredited Barrier Free Advisor having assessed over 60 Auckland locations as part of Auckland Council’s accessibility programme.

Karen Beard Greer is the CEO of the Independent Living Service and has 20 years experience running businesses in the health and wellness sector.  Karen will facilitate the session and bring a managers oversight of the considerations for employing people from a range of abilities.

This event focuses on employee wellbeing and you will learn how to deliver Wellbeing as a Strategy in your organisation. To put it simply this means health, safety, and wellbeing are a shared responsibility between the employee and employer. As many other companies have learnt this leads to a rise in productivity and increased profit. 

This workshop will show you how to help employees better understand and take ownership of their wellbeing, learning how to become more resilient and ultimately to be their best self.

The facilitators are Dr Louise Schofield and Dr Clara Budd who will work through initiatives to:

  • Help you to understand the Health Profile of your employees providing detailed information to ensure strategic decisions are made.
  • Help you (and senior management) to understand what programmes/rewards/benefits are most valued by employees.
  • Help you to elevate health to the same status as safety and quality in your organisation
  • Help you to make changes to the physical work environment that will result in healthier and more engaged employees.
  • Demonstrate to you the power of narrative and storytelling when engaging your people in Wellbeing initiatives.  
  • Show you how to use micro-contributions from your employees; that is have employee led wellbeing experiences that help your people to thrive.
  • Help you to have clear, concise, and compelling data for senior management on the cost vs. benefit of the Wellbeing strategy/programme.
